Area 51 appears to be your usual FPS. Nothing too special about the game to warrant a purchase but nothing to really make the game a stink bomb either. Ign.com reviewed Area 51 and gave it an 8.0 out of 10 on the XBOX. The game is very good looking and sports good animations but doesn't have the great lighting that we have gotten accustomed to lately. The sound effects are very good but David Duchovny has got to go. Honestly he just needs to be punched in the mouth. The storyline is such a mess in Area 51 and that is part of the reason why the game received an 8 out of 10. Also there is no clear incentive to complete the game other than to involve yourself in some awesome engagements and trust me when i say, the firefights are definitely worth it and make Area 51 a definite rental and possibly could warrant a purchase depending on your tastes. The game does have multiplayer as well but there just is not enough variation to keep you wanting to come back for more like a little game that goes by the name of Halo 2. Anyway if you don't have an XBOX and you have a PS2, Area 51 received an 8.5 out of 10 for it's great graphics on the system. It just takes more effort for the PS2 to shell out near the type of graphics that the XBOX offers. So either one would be a good choice.
